Some stories are inspired by small triumphs. Others, by overcoming great challenges. And for some children around the world, the challenge is no less than life or death.

The spirit of the Inspired by Diabetes initiative is to bring families and people with diabetes together to raise awareness of the global burden of diabetes — and draw particular attention to people who do not have the resources they need to fight diabetes.

By entering the Creative Expression Competition, you can have a direct impact.

When you enter the contest, you will receive two "blue circle" diabetes pins, illustrating the global symbol for diabetes. For each set of pins distributed, a dollar will be donated to the International Diabetes Federation's Life for a Child Program, which provides diabetes care for children in developing nations.

Life for a Child
For any child in any country, the diagnosis of diabetes can be devastating. With access to appropriate education, treatment and equipment, most children can learn to manage their diabetes effectively.

Unfortunately, the majority of children living in developing countries do not have access to the life saving medicines they need. As a result, they become chronically ill; many die quickly, while others develop severe complications such as kidney failure, blindness and nerve damage.

IDF's Life for a Child Program is a global initiative that provides insulin, diabetes supplies and diabetes education to help these children survive.

Eli Lilly and Company is one of Life for a Child's major corporate sponsors. In addition to donating the cost of the blue circle diabetes pins, Lilly will make a separate donation to support the Life for a Child Program on behalf of entrants in the Inspired by Diabetes campaign.

Support in the U.S.
Even in developed nations, some children with diabetes don't receive the support they need to thrive. In the spirit of the Inspired by Diabetes campaign, Lilly will also commit funds to support initiatives for children with diabetes who need help in the United States.

Lilly is pleased to work with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as the Inspired by Diabetes U.S. National Advocate to provide needed services to children across the country.

Your creativity can help someone around the world

The Inspired by Diabetes Creative Expression Competition builds on the theme of IDF's World Diabetes Day 2006-2007, dedicated to children and adolescents living with or at risk of diabetes worldwide.

We particularly encourage families to enter the competition to support the World Diabetes Day theme.

But the Creative Expression Competition is not limited to children; the contest is open to any child or adult affected by diabetes — or their family members and friends — from any country.

Entries will be judged by an independent panel of prominent figures within the global diabetes community.

In addition, participants from the United States will have their submissions entered into a separate U.S. contest with a chance to win both the national and global competitions. The U.S. grand-prize winners will also receive a trip to the opening of the U.S. national exhibition. As additional groups worldwide join this initiative, other countries may also choose to hold individual country competitions for a chance to win both competitions.

Diabetes is a challenging journey that affects individuals, families and communities worldwide. Current estimates show that more than 246 million people around the globe are currently living with diabetes, and tens of millions more will develop it in the coming decades.

Lilly is proud to collaborate with IDF and the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) to promote the Inspired by Diabetes Creative Expression Competition as a way to help people with diabetes express and share their diabetes experiences — and in doing so join the World Diabetes Day campaign and support children with diabetes worldwide.

We believe that the stories of how individuals and families have taken action to tackle diabetes, regardless of circumstances or where they live, can help to inspire others to take action — both to improve the care of people with diabetes and help to overcome the obstacles that a life with diabetes can bring.
